ENPaper presents a fragment of the Second Lithuanian Chronicle which has so far not been introduced into academic circulation. The manuscript of the Chronicle was kept at the Radziwiłł’s library in Biała (now Biała Podlaska). In January 1701, the fragment oh the Chronicle was copied (actually, translated from Ruthenian into Polish) by Demetriusz Zankiewicz, the superior of the Basilian monastery in Biała. The paper proves that the examined fragment, which tells of the fictional duke Ławrysz, the assumed founder of Lauryshava monastery near Navahrudak, is a translation of a section of the Raczyński manuscript of the Lithuanian Chronicle. It attempts to cast light on the reasons for this translation, and on its place in Basilian writing. The paper maintains that the monks tried to use it to better justify the mythology behind the foundation of the monastery. At present the fragment is kept in the Inventories collection (F 4) of the Manuscript Department of the Vilnius University Library. The publication is based on the older copy of the Notification dated the first half of the eighteenth century, which is less distant from Zankiewicz’s autograph. [From the publication]
