Summary / Abstract:

ENIn the article the author examines the life and work of the poet Juozas Macevičius (1928-2011), who belonged to the post-war generation of poets who, for a considerable time, sincerely believed in the validity of socialist ideology. Today it seems as though they are no longer interesting to anyone. The almost complete silencing of discussion about Macevičius is the result of the change of regime, the poet’s own choice, and a strange turn of events (most of the copies of his last, and probably best, collection of poems never reached either readers or libraries). Even his death was only publicized after he had been buried – following his own wishes. Criticized for the excessive lyricism in his first book, "Pavasario žingsniai" (Spring Steps, 1949), the poet went on to write a good number of poems exalting the Party, Stalin and Lenin; however, it gradually became clear that ideals were not reflected in reality, bringing to light the drama of the lyrical subject and his generation. Although Macevičius’s views evolved, he continued to declare his leftist orientation even after independence, and his poems articulated the sense of a lonely, cold, and empty world.
