ENChallenges and changes of today’s organization are closely related to its personnel. The effectiveness of organization therefore first of all depends on human resources management and development. The continual development of human resources professionalism is the essential principal of modern organization. In order to get the best use of officers as the main human resources of the Lithuanian National Defense system it is necessary to ensure the optimal system of their professionalism development. The theoretical part of the article covers the conception of professionalism development, including concepts and interfaces of professionalism, qualification and competence; discloses peculiarities of officer professionalism development system as well as its importance to the modern armed forces. The research results give the opportunity to identify limitations of the system and to determine trends for its development. Thereby, the main task of today’s officer professionalism development system – to train and develop officers in accordance with NATO strategy, doctrines and standards to fulfill war and peacetime missions – requires officers to be well educated and trained, to posses profound professional knowledge needed for their daily service as well asfor decision making process regarding national security and defense.The research results disclosed some still existing weaknesses of officer professionalism development system: officers lack information on their development; possibilities to be trained and developed are not the same for all officers; lack of impartiality in selection to the course system; lack of regularity and organization in officer development; inefficient compatibility of officer development and career planning. Notwithstanding the fact that the existing system and its improvement over the last ten years is rated as quite good by some officers, the comparative analysis shows some aspects of imperfection. The need to develop officer professionalism remains one of the essentials in the modern armed forces in the context of national and international security. The growing level of officer education and experience gained in courses in Lithuania and abroad highly contribute to the current officer professionalism development system and its perfection.
