ENAim of this paper is to overview the role of Vilnius Science Lovers society, Lithuanian Scientific Society and the North-West Department of Russian Imperial Geographic Society in propagation of the knowledge of native history and culture. During preparation of this article archive materials, articles in contemporary press and works of Lithuanian and Polish authors were used. The Lithuanian Scientific Society paid main attention to the past of Lithuanian people, their culture and their most prominent representatives. Main subject of Vilnius Science Lovers Society was the history of Lithuanian Grand Principality, archives, development of economy and towns, biographies of distinguished Polish persons. The North-West Department of Russian Imperial Geographic Society was acting rather during a short time period, it brought some contribution to research of Belarusian culture and Baltic archeological monuments. The results of scientific researches were presented in the meetings of Society and published in various editions "Lietuvių tauta", "Rocznik Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk w Wilnie", "Записки Северо-Западного Отдела Императорского Русского Географического Общества". These editions were delivered to Lithuanian libraries and also to many libraries abroad and so was propagated knowledge of Lithuanian history and culture.All these societies were established in the time of increase of national movements and were not independent of nationalistic ideology. Founders and supporters of these societies had a hope that their society will serve ones nation interest: Vilnius Science Lovers Society for Poles, Lithuanian Society of Science – for Lithuanians and North-West Department of Russian Imperial Geographic Society – for Russians. This department was involved in the study of Belarusian history and culture more intense than of Russian one. [From the publication]
