ENArticle emphasises that the fishery sector built only on short-term economic priorities has faced a serious threat to destroy its own source of revenue. The article analyses theoretical and practical aspects of sustainable development of Lithuanian fishery sector. It was noted that Lithuania must preserve and develop fishery sector restructuring it into effective in economic terms and socially advantageous branch of industry. In 2004 Lithuania as a member joined the EU and in cooperation with other EU countries it participates in formation and implementation of the Common Fishery policy. The membership in the Community and its financial support to the fishery sector under Single Programming document and its Annex helped Lithuania to adapt its fishery sector for operation in the Community market and to make reforms in administrative system respectively. The development of Lithuanian fishery sector must advance taking into account the aspects of sustainable development. It has to be noted, that development of Lithuanian fishery sector must proceed in pursuance with the general principles of implementation of the EU methodological culture and integration of national fishery sector into the EU fishery industry, i.e.: sustainable development, equal possibilities, regional development and information society. The article concludes that official documents of Lithuanian fishery sector are in conformance with the EU and Lithuanian strategic development documents. [From the publication]
