ENIn 1919, Juozas Naujalis founded a private music school in Kaunas, which was an incentive contribution to the development of Lithuanian music pedagogics. The school, launched on 1 October 1919, became the first Lithuanian state music education institution, which was turned into a conservatory on 7 February 1933. On the basis of documents and judging from activities of Kaunas State Music School, one may conclude that: a) during its first years the school put major emphasis on preparing music teachers for schools of secondary education; in 1927 a new programme for the school was ratified by the council of teachers and the focus of the school shifted to education of performers and composers; b) at the end of the first decade of its activities, the Kaunas State Music School in fact functioned as an institution of music education at university level; c) the education programme of the school and later of the conservatory was modelled upon experience of Moscow, Riga and St. Petersburg conservatories; d) the structure of Kaunas Conservatory included subdivisions of the secondary and higher music education institutions. The primary education was carried out by private schools, studios and the People's Conservatory; e) due to the broad range of prior educational background of the students and differences in age, graduation diplomas and grades varied; thus not all of the students having attended the school were successful in receiving a degree; f) the teaching of specific subjects was based upon the pedagogic principles of well-established European institutions; g) moreover, Lithuanian musicians were raised by the specialists that had already been educated under these European traditions; h) eventually the graduates of this higher music institution become to make up the nucleus of Lithuanian professional orchestras and ensembles; i) Lithuanian music pedagogics evolved during the years of Kaunas Music School and Conservatory; it drew upon the well-established traditions of European pedagogics.
