The Image of an occupied city : Walter Buhe's Vilnius of the First World War

LTPirmojo pasaulinio karo laikotarpiu Lietuvoje kurta dailė yra beveik netyrinėtas, dėl politinių priežasčių ignoruotas reiškinys, ypač tai pasakytina apie vokiečių dailę, kurtą Lietuvoje. Čia dislokuotoje kaizerio kariuomenėje tarnavę vokiečių dailininkai sukūrė nemažai darbų su lietuviška ikonografija, kurie atspindi skirtingų kultūrų - vietinės ir vokiškosios susidūrimą specifinėmis, karo aplinkybėmis. Šis straipsnis skirtas atvejo studijai - Vilniuje kūrusiam vokiečių spaudos dailininkui Walteriui Buhei ir okupuoto miesto įvaizdžiui jo kūryboje. Vokiečiai ėjo į Rytų Europą ne tik gerai ginkluoti, bet ir su puikiai paruoštu propagandiniu aparatu, modernia spaustuvių baze ir, uždarę okupuotuose kraštuose vietinius laikraščius, ėmė leisti savus. Vilnius tapo vieno pagrindinių karinio-administracinio vieneto - Ober-Osto - tranzito centrų, čia leisti keli laikraščiai „Zeitung der 10. Armee" ir „Wilnaer Zeitung". Prie jų ėjo iliustruoti priedai, vienas jų buvo „Bilderschau der Wilnaer Zeitung", šio priedo 1916-1918 m. komplektas sudaro įspūdingą vizualinį karo laikotarpio Vilniaus albumą. Pagrindinis jo dailininkas Buhe kūrė viršelius, iliustravo straipsnius, o kiekviename laikraščio „Wilnaer Zeitung" numeryje spausdino po vieną piešinį. Vilniaus dailės istorijoje nedaug dailininkų, kurie būtų palikę tokį didelį vizualinį miesto liudijimą. ENVisual arts that were created during the World War I are almost unanalysed. The phenomenon was ignored because of political reasons. This is particularly true when talking about German visual arts created in Lithuania. German artists who served in kaiser's army that was disposed here created quite a lot of works containing Lithuanian iconography; the works reflect the contact of two different cultures, local and German, under specific, war circumstances. The article in intended for the study of one case: Walter Buhe, German artist of print who created in Vilnius, and the image of occupied town in his creative work. When moving to East Europe, Germans were not only well-armed, they had a well prepared propaganda mechanism and the base of modern printing-houses, as well; therefore they started publishing their own newspapers after the closure of local newspapers in occupied territories. Vilnius became one of the most important transit centres of the military-administrative unit “Ober-Osto”. A few newspapers such as “Zeitung der 10. Armee” and “Wilnaer Zeitung” were published there. They had illustrated supplements, for instance “Bilderschau der Wilnaer Zeitung”. A collection of this supplement dated 1916–1918 presents an impressive visual album of Vilnius during the war. Its main artist Buhe created covers and illustrated articles. Every number of “Wilnaer Zeitung” contains his picture. The history of Vilnius visual arts does not include many artists who left such a huge visual depiction of the town. Only three topical discourses may be discussed: Germanisation of Vilnius, fixation of Vilnius monuments, and the picture of Vilnius residents. [...].
