Nuo Vaitiškių iki Augsburgo : karo meto atsiminimai

LTLietuvos kariuomenės karininko majoro Justino Juozo Mašioto (1901-1987) atsiminimų knygoje pasakojamas vienas skaudžiausių ir menkai visuomenėje žinomų valstybės istorijos epizodų - Mašiotų šeimos likimas antrosios sovietų okupacijos akivaizdoje. Memuaruose aprašomas vienos šeimos pasitraukimas į Vakarus perteikia daugelio panašioje situacijoje atsidūrusių lietuvių likimus. ENThe publication presents the memoirs of Juozas Mašiotas (1901-1987) - the military officer of the Lithuanian army. This interesting and significant historiographical source reflects the fates of the military officers and ordinary citizens who were forced to flee Lithuania and their journey to the West. The memoirs of Mašiotas, written during the war years, in Germany, reveal a period of time which is not widely known to the public - the escape of Mašiotas family from Lithuania at the beginning of the second Soviet occupation, their journey through Germany and settlement in DP camps. The memoirs begin with the description of July 30th and August 3rd, 1944, when Juozas Mašiotas, his wife Konstancija Vosyliūtė and their daughters leave their native Vaitiškiai for Germany by a horse-drawn carriage. The story ends in August, 1945, when the family reaches the displaced persons' camp in Augsburg. The escape of one family to the West illustrates the destinies of a number of Lithuanians in a similar situation. Wartime years spent in Germany, escape from the front lines of war, journey across the German towns, perils and worries about the future were all recorded in the pages of the memoirs. The author vividly and humorously depicts the everyday life of Germany and its people, the traditions of Prussians, Lithuanians and Germans, the life and hard work during the war years, the German character and even the different features of people living in certain regions of the country (for example, Bavaria or Saxony).The memoirs of Mašiotas are valuable not only because of their historical context or description of the happenings and the people of those times, but also as an interesting and gripping work of literature. These unique memories enrich the modest creative heritage of the Lithuanian army as well as present for the public the little-known experiences of the Lithuanians who were forced to leave their homeland. The memoirs also include a scientific introduction, author's biography, commentaries and explanations, a number of illustrations and a map which depicts the route of Mašiotas family. The memoirs are valuable not only as an excellent historiographical source for the researchers and historians, but also for the society at large as a means of education of the young generation.
