ENDevelopment of possibilities of continuing learning for adults is a task of major social importance. In Lithuania, it is very important to validate competences which have been acquired in a non-formal manner, therefore, it is recommended to strengthen the sector of non-formal learning and create possibilities for the validation of competences acquired in the non-formal sector. The profession of social work is complex and multi-faceted, therefore, social workers are required to take part in the process of continuing learning. Currently, Lithuania’s child care homes face a difficult situation due to a plan of optimisation of care institutions which has been implemented for a couple of years now whereby the position of mentor in child care homes is liquidated and mentors must be retrained to work as social workers. For many of them, it is particularly important to be retrained or to acquire a qualification of the social worker. The objective of the paper is to analyse the attitude of social workers who work in social institutions towards professional development. In the course of a quantitative study, empirical (questionnaire) and statistical (SPSS programme package) methods were applied. The study was conducted at the end of 2010; 179 specialists who do social work in various institutions providing social services participated in the study. The study of the attitude of social workers, who work in social institutions, towards professional development has revealed that, in the opinion of the majority of respondents, the most important reasons for professional development are creation of the conditions for promotion, good working conditions, allocation of additional pay and creation of the conditions for participation in the decision-making process; professional development events are useful because, during such events, opportunities are provided for the exchange of experience with colleagues, subject knowledge is provided and new work methods are introduced; during courses of professional development, teaching is based on conveying a synthesis of theoretical knowledge and practical skills; the most popular methods of the provision of teaching material are seminars, lectures and sharing of the best practice; during courses of professional development, specialists prefer to learn about work with the individual, family and community, psychology of social work, counselling in social work as well as formation and management of helping teams; non-participation of specialists in courses of professional development is usually determined by a lack of funds and information; according to specialists, courses of professional development would be more effective if they were more specialised and organised closer to the specialists’ place of residence.
