EN[...] Paper overviews the current professional development system of military officers and highlights its peculiarities and role in modern armed forces and a national and international security system. Professional armed forces must be well prepared, have military capacities therefore special attention must be paid to military training and professional development of officers and soldiers. The main objective of a professional development system of military officers is to train officers to perform tasks professionally in war and peace time and ensure that military training and development complies with the strategy, doctrine, procedures and standards of NATO. Professional development must help officers to fulfil duties and ensure a high professional level of the army. Professional development is important seeking a career in the army and promotion in rank and gives a competitive advantage in filling positions. Therefore, professional development should be encouraged and supported by regularly sending officers to training and development courses to gain and refresh knowledge and skills. A questionnaire survey was conducted to identify flaws in the professional development system of officers and propose improvement opportunities. Research findings helped to identify a number of flaws of the system: information about professional development opportunities is lacking, training and development opportunities are unequal, candidate selection to courses is biased, systematic and consistent approach to professional development is missing, professional development and career planning are misbalanced.The following may serve as guidelines for improvement of the professional development system: comprehensive information about professional development opportunities must be provided, the principles of equality, transparency and impartiality must be ensured, professional development must be organised on a regular basis, professional development and career planning must be consistent.
