Old Lithuanian interrogative particle "biau"

LTPaliudyta tris kartus Mažvydo Katekizmo pratarmėje dalelytė „biau“ ‘ar’ dažniausiai buvo aiškinama kaip klausiamosios dalelytės „be“ su enklitiku -u junginys, plg. gr. πάν-υ ‘altogether’. Mūsų nuomone, „biau“ lengviausia paaiškinti kaip ankstesnės lyties „be-jau“ sutrumpinimo rezultatą, plg. panašų procesą „niaũ-gi (LKŽ 8, 762)

ENThe particle biau occurs three times in the Preface to Mažvydas’ Catechismus. Traditionally it is said that biau is a combination of the interrogative particle be and the enclitic -u as in Greek πάν-υ ‘altogether’. We believe that the easiest explanation is that biau is a result of the shortened former gender form of be-jau as in Lith. niaũ-gi (LKŽ 8, 762)
