ENAntanas Venclova's poetic heritage is not extensive (excluding the texts purely subservient to ideology), but it remains important to the history of Lithuanian literature. In the poetry of the 1920's and 1930's he displayed himself as an avant-garde poet striving to renew the Lithuanian poetry, to bring it closer to the tendencies of Western literature. All Venclova's activities, including his poetry, show his commitment to work for the sake of Lithuanian culture. During the WWII and later on, he tended to classical poetics. He has written many static, merely descriptive poems on travel impressions or landscapes, however, he has also created masterful tercets, sestinas, sonnets, triolets, and lyric poems that are far from being just monosemantic pieces of Socialist realism and still are waiting for interpreters.
