Summary / Abstract:

[Iš leidinio]In Lithuania about 3.5 thousand children are placed in foster care every year because of restricted parental rights. An increasing amount of attention and financial support has been paid to the problems of children and adolescents living in foster care institutions. In order to increase psychosocial functioning of these children, special programs are being proposed. However, there are few data on the nature of the prevalence of psychosocial problems experienced by children living in foster care institutions. The goal of the study was to assess psychosocial difficulties of adolescents living in foster care institution and their links to the factors of age, sex and the specificity of the institution. We used the "Standardized Interview for the Evaluation of Adolescents Problems" (Goštautas, Pakrosnis & Čepukienė, 2003) to assess difficulties in the areas of physical functioning, use of psychoactive substances, experience of stressful events, adaptation in foster family, at school, relationship with peers, behavior in conflict situations, self-esteem, cognitive functioning, emotions and mood, suicidal tendency. Internal consistency of the interview was consistent with the requirements for psychological assessment tools (Cronbach a = 0,804). Ninety one 11-18 years adolescents, living in two different foster care institutions were interviewed. The results show that most of the respondents (82%) reported five or more difficulties in various areas of bio-psycho-social functioning. The average number of reported difficulties was 7.8.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Globos įstaigos; Paauglys, gyvenantis globos įstaigose; Paauglystė; Prisitaikymo sunkumai; Psichosocialinis prisitaikymas; Tėvystės teisės; Adjustment difficulties; Adolescence; Foster care institutions; Parental rights; Psychosocial adjustment; The teenager, who lives in institutions.

ENMost of these difficulties were related to negative emotions (most often emotional irritability and fears) and various conflicts with foster care staff, teachers and peers usually emerging as a result of the respondents' inappropriate behavior. The results also suggest that male respondents experienced more difficulties related to inappropriate behavior, when female respondents reported lower self-esteem, more emotional and mood difficulties as well as more suicidal thoughts and attempts. Older adolescents (15-18 years) comparing to the younger ones (11-14 years) use more psychoactive substances, express higher suicidal tendency and higher total number of reported difficulties. Adolescents living in foster care institution oriented towards family model reported more conflicts with foster care stuff because of learning. Adolescents living in foster care institution fostering children with behavioral problems and oriented towards stricter rules reported using more tobacco and alcohol as well as more conflicts with foster care staff because of strict control.
