ENThe article deals with primary (non-derivative) Baltic and Germanic verbs which originated from common Indo-European roots of the CeR type. They are one of the most archaic Indo - European roots, verbal continuants of which can have all the degrees of vowel gradation.. Inflectional and the so-called etymological vowel gradations in the roots of Baltic and Germanic primary verbs are compared. After having established the laws of vowel gradation in both groups of languages, the degrees of vowel gradation in the Baltic and Germanic Present and Preterite forms are discussed: an attempt is made to find out which common traits of the Baltic and Germanic vowel gradation are of the Indo-European origin, and which are innovations typical exclusively of those groups of languages.
