ENThe book consists of texts of various authors, written in different times. The texts in different aspects naturally supplement each other and help to create a more versatile and consistent view of the implemented reform of Lithuanian high education. The common topic, Lithuanian high education reform, is the notional and specific thread uniting the authors. An important source of the prehistory of the reform is the memoirs of R. Sližys about the first attempts to reform Lithuanian high education after regaining independence, published three years ago. The memoirs present publicly little known facts about unsuccessful attempts to reform and modernize the high education system. They allow understanding, what were the core reasons, which had caused crisis of the system, which was constantly increasing. The main idea of V. Radžilas article is that upon creation the plans for reform, not the most reliable high education management and financing system of the most progressive countries was taken as a background, but it was based on the most radical provisions of the free market ideology. V. Daujotis’s study is the main part of the book and its core. The study reveals economic, social and educational reasons of the implemented reforms, the peculiarities of its implementation, internal logics and possible outcomes of the reform to Lithuanian high education and the future of the entire country. The final A. Janulaitis’s article discusses controversial aspects of the reform and analyses moral and social provisions of Lithuanian academia, which did not allow directing the reform the more constructive way which could have been more useful for society and the state.
