ENIn the presented article the author's aim is to reveal the dual origin of theatricality of Savickis' prose. From the outset the theatrical origin of any literary discourse is emphasized and the self-conscious character of Savickis' writing is explicated. The writer compares objective to theatrical realities, he continually accentuates such lexemes as "mask" and "role" in the portrayal of his characters. Separation of two narrative programmes - a person and an actor – in Savickis' prose is a way to create a more artistic, frequently ironic effect. Treating his characters as actors of certain metaphysical theatre, the author reveals his philosophical outlook, the conception of illusive life that is a principle of a modern art. Theatrical code in Savickis' short stories is not only a way to ornament the text, but rather a specific effort to demystify the world and to give it new meanings. [text from author]
