ENApplying the semiotic method, the article presents an account of how sense is sought in a cumulative process of its generation in a modern American short story. God Was Here but He Left Early by Irwin Shaw. It reveals not only how elemental senses multiply but also how different minds and utterances accumulate sense drawing it at different points of the narrative and turns of the conflict. The lead notion in the story, that of God appears to be an ephemeral concept which builds up from contextual implications rather than statements. The earthly world seems to be a thing apart, earche and death-hearing, and it is man to whom it is given to solve and settle the problems and tragedies for which he himself is responsible. Although the active characters in the story live neither blessed by the Christian God nor share the splendour of the pagan Gods, the image of God of which the world is here, associates with the Cosmos global power rather than with the suffering salutary and familiar figure of Christ. The story warrants no proof to support the latter image, while the former concept of deity lends itself to deliberation on worship and religion in terms of the noble mind of the greatest poets and this is the warranted extension of the sense of the story.
