ENThe article deals with the influence of W. Dilthey's Life hermeneutics on J. Lindė-Dobilas' conception of literature. This influence is presented not only as reception of the book Der Erlebnis und die Dichtung, but also as continuation of a broader aesthetical tradition, starting with I. Kant and ending with the Dilthey an school of literature studies (O. Walcel, F. Strich, E. Ermatinger, etc.). The essence of art is defined by this tradition as individual creative consciousness, which is described by employing psychological method based on aesthetical experience, and actualizing concepts of experience, motive, and worldview. Lindė especially favored the general approach of Life hermeneutics, namely, striving for bringing fiction back from the high and abstract ideals closer to the real life, endowing it status of human significance, actualizing considerations of immanence of creativity and art. His self-awareness was more open towards the traditional side of Dilthey an hermeneutics, leading to interpretation of works by Schiller and Goethe.Modern discoveries made by Dilthey,i.e. principles of phenomenological interpretation, the idea of mediated interpretation and detour, the scholarly methodology, the historical criticism, which freshly linked interpretation and introspection, escaped his aesthetical focus. Lindė was incapable of adequately grasping Dilthey an hermeneutics as critique of the absolutism in science; he romanticized and subjectivized it too much. He attempted at creation of original aesthetical system by combining traits of Taine, Dilthey and Croce; therefore Lindė should be regarded as promoter of Dilthey in Lithuanian society, rather than his interpreter. The separate methodological attitudes borrowed from Life hermencutes by Lindė essentially fostered the general development of the literary criticism in the interwar Lithuania. [text from author]
