ENThe article analyses the development and differences of higher college education mission regarding exterior diversification (private – state colleges, social – technical colleges, regional – city colleges), and discusses college’s development tendencies through the prism of the vision. College mission were expediently attempted to disclose by conducting a qualitative research – focus group semistructured interview with members of academic community of colleges. Six groups were formed in private and state Vilnius and other regions colleges by using criteria sampling. College mission and vision, presented on colleges internet sites are also analyzed in the article. A college in Lithuania is a young education institution established only a decade ago, therefore it is the right time to discuss the mission of newly formed higher education. The purpose is to compare the objectives of colleges from the beginning of the establishment and to look at further development tendencies through the prism of the vision. Institutions of higher college education are very dynamic, rapidly evolving and having been established within the system of higher education in a relatively short period of time. However, comparing currently published college mission with the intended purpose at the beginning of their creation, we can allocate two directions: some colleges formulate their mission too narrow or they just don’t pay necessary attention to that, while others – on the contrary – insert such conceptions and activities, which are pursued and carried out by universities. This is the way how to gain greater recognition in society, revealing strengths and enhancing status.Speaking about research results obtained, it is possible to confirm, that due to the inherent dynamism of the binary system and the efforts of colleges themselves to develop, higher college education mission has been changing in comparison with the early development of the sector: for most state and private colleges the most important aims are the promotion of internationality and the development of scientific applied work. External diversification leads to a different approach to the principle of regionalism: the principle of regionalism for state colleges is one of the fundamental features of their work, while private colleges’ mission, without presenting it on their internet sites, show that they don’t limit themselves to meet the needs of only the region community. Although it has been almost a decade since the formation of colleges from separate higher schools, some of state colleges, which have been created in the same way, do not deliver their institution’s total mission to society on internet sites. Its formulation of individual faculties’ level shows that the self-vision of a separate institution has been still remaining. Having analysed college vision it appears that the essential change in higher college education is not expected, because the college academic community can not make essential political decision. It is confirmed that current and future period of 3–5 years for colleges is an improvement and consolidation stage of their process and activities, both external and internal. In order to succeed, there should be more emphasis of the members of academic community on the development of knowledge. [From the publication]
