ENKnowledge about history played a significant role in civil education and upbringing in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Topics such as ancient history, world history and history of the homeland have been equally emphasized in education acquired at schools and in homes, especially of the political élite. History thought there was associated with contemporariness of students life and served as a treasury of patterns to be followed. An important element of such education was the recalling the military victories that empowered the myth of szlachta (gentry) and its sense of national identity. The carefully selected episodes of military victories of the following kingships were presented as a part of a local history of the region and of one's own family, therefore in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania appropriately, the Lithuanian perspective was of the highest priority. Close acquaintance with history originated in very pragmatic purpose. Without that the young generation of gentry and aristocracy would not have persuasive power and influence in public life considering the fact that the local heroes have been preferred even to the ancient ones. The Enlightenment transformed educational model from the knight's pattern oriented to the model of peace creating public activity. Nevertheless, it is worthy to discuss the role of memoralization of military victories in the writings addressed to the broad range of readers in the times of Stanisław August Poniatowski's kingship.
