Summary / Abstract:

ENPriest Pijus Brazauskas (1905-1990) was quite well known during the interwar period in Lithuania, but is undeservingly forgotten in our days. The creative heritage of this artist is not unanimous from geographical point of view - he was creating in Lithuania and in exile. The first period of P. Brazauskas' artistic activity in Lithuania lacks thorough studying; one can find only short analysis of single works or just references to the artist. The later works created in USA are also little known in our country. Priest not only painted pictures, but decorated church interiors as well. Research object: P. Brazauskas' artistic creation. Aim of the article: to investigate P. Brazauskas' artistic creation in Užnemunė region and to evaluate his mural painting in the church of Pajevonys. Methods: find-factual, historic, reconstructional, formal, stylistic analysis, iconographic. The article shortly recalls the most important facts about P. Brazauskas' life. While investigating P. Brazauskas' artistic activity in Užnemunė region, his theoretical basics are explored as well. Priest has studied at Kaunas Art School, therefore the curriculum of this school and teaching professors of that time are discussed. Practical works - first painting experiments and works for churches are also surveyed. It is attempted in the article to review which artists influenced his artistic conception. The murai painting in Pajevonys church is presented at large and also evaluated. The church architecture has been changed, the murai painting has not survived, and therefore only the development of historic construction is surveyed. Very few mural fragments were found, photographed and analysed in the aspects of form, matter and style. Priest P. Brazauskas proportioned pastoral and artistic activities in various periods of his life. Two creative periods could be distinguished in P. Brazauskas' creation: Lithuanian period in 1923-1944 and exile period in 1945-1990. The first creative stage in Lithuania coincided with his studies at Vilkaviškis' Theological Seminary in Gižai (1923-1930). Pastoral activity in Aleksotas parish (1932-1936) is bound with studies at Kaunas Art School (Department of General Artistic Education). In different creative stages P. Brazauskas' art was marked by genre diversity: he painted landscapes, portraits and compositions of religious, historic and national topics. Religious paintings were predominant, the most favourite theme being christological one. The works are not unanimous from stylistic point of view; the artist was changing styles all his life, looking for new means of expression. Often topics for the works had been provoked by various historic events. First pieces of art intertwine the realistic approach, neo-romantic tendencies and influences of newer art trends of the 20th century. The painting manner, stylization, decorative character was close to the creation of teachers at Kaunas Art School (A. Varnas, J. Šileika, P. Kalpokas, S. Ušinskas). Novelties were sought in religious painting as well. It was clarified that most of the works for churches of Užnemunė region (restoration works, pictures, mural painting) were accomplished by P. Brazauskas still being an amateur artist, before his studies at Kaunas Art School. His mural painting for Pajevonys church could be pointed out as the most monumental piece of art. The research enabled to specify that the murai painting has been fulfilled not only in the church interior, but in the exterior as well. It has been accomplished in oil painting technique. The creation date of the wall painting was corrected as well - it was created from 1928 to the end of the 1940s. Some pieces of mural painting found at the interior allowed investigat.
