ENIn this article the author compares the prose and poetry works written by a few famous Lithuanian writers in the first decade s of the 20 the century. The underlying aim of the article is to show that in Lithuanian literature traditional epic (heroic epic) was transformed into a distinctive whole, consisting of epical and lyrical components. Balys Sruoga used to say that this whole is a characteristic system of Lithuanian epic which began with "Dainavos šalies senų žmonių padavimai" ("Legends of the Old People of Dainava", 1913) by Vincas Krėvė. Similar literary variations, found in the works of Sruoga, Vaižgantas and other writers, are discussed in the article. The author demonstrates how these specific epical types of discourse are used in prose and long poems. [text from author]
