Lithuanian transnationalism : constructed, imagined and contestes identity of Lithuanian Americans

LTŠiame darbe pateikiama bendra Amerikos lietuvių sociokultūrinė panorama bei siekiama nustatyti rėmus tolimesniam lietuviškumo kaip tebevykstančio etininės/tautinės tapatybės proceso tyrimui. Bandoma atsakyti, kas lemia tokį stiprų susitapatinimą su tautiškumu ir etniškumu; per ką konkrečiai buvo ir tebėra įsivaizduojamas, konstruojamas bei varžosi lietuvių etniškumas ir tapatybė skirtingose Amerikos lietuvių grupėse; kaip lietuvių etniškumo formavimąsi lėmė susidūrimas su kitos etninės kilmės amerikiečiais. Darbas remiasi etnografiniais lauko tyrimais atliktais Ilinojaus valstijoje (1998 ir 2000). Buvo koncentruojamasi į buvusių žemdirbių ir anglies kasyklų bendruomenių pietų Ilinojuje ir tebeegzistuojančių Čikagos bendruomenių socialinę atmintį.

ENThe thesis conveys the general sociocultural panorama of the American Lithuanians and endeavours to set up the framework for the survey of the Lithuanian character as the ongoing process of ethnic/national identity. It is attempted to answer what is responsible for such strong identity with nationality and ethnicity; what specific medium was and still is used for visualisation, construction and competition of Lithuanian ethnicity and identity in individual groups of the American Lithuanians; how formation of Lithuanian ethnicity was determined by the encounter with the Americans of a different ethnic origin. The thesis is based on the ethnographic field surveys carried out in Illinois (1998 and 2000). The focus is given to the social memory of the former agriculturalists and coalminers communities of Southern Illinois and the existent communities in Chicago.
