Summary / Abstract:

ENDevelopment of the theory on regional policy, its application in Western states and economic expedience arc being reviewed in the article. It has been proved that balanced economic development diminishes the existing economic and social differences in the country and also creates conditions for a more speedy economic development of the country. The ways of the implementation of the regional policy paradigm is being analyzed in the article. The aim of the article is to assess the impact of the country's economic structure on the level of the region's compatibility and the existing degree of divergences. The statistic analysis of the data has proved that the region's compatibility is directly dependant on its industrial structure. Agricultural regions create lessadded value than industrial ones, attract a smaller amount of private investments and influence higher migration of qualified employees to other regions. The unemployment rate is lower In industrial regions, higher added value is being created there, and export volume to foreign markets is higher from these regions as well. Industry in those regions attracts much more investments and increases their competitiveness. In some regions the structure of export is ineffective as it mainly consists of raw materials and intermediate products. Service sector prevails in economically developed regions. Regional policy in Lithuania should rely on scientific researches, which assess regional advantages and problems in general. [From the publication]
