ENTen years ago yet nobody would have been surprised by the words written by Meras, a Lithuanian writer, who emigrated from Lithuania in 1972, that already more than one generation has grown up without even having heard his name. Currently, the situation has essentially changed, and the books by Meras have been included in the reading lists for school learners; in 2010 he was awarded the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize, the most honourable prize in this country. The information about the writer can easily be found in different publications; however, wrong data sometimes occur, as well as inaccurate interpretations, which have been discussed in this article. The focus has been laid on some most important issues, namely, recognition and bans in the Soviet times, the circumstances of emigration, and changes in the reception of his creation in different historical periods.
