ENThe Lithuanian poet Alfonsas Nyka-Niliūnas has made some significant deep-reaching revisions of a number of his poems over the years, albeit that he sometimes made the claim of having revised "only a little". The poem under discussion was published under the title "First Symphony" in a collection called The Symphonies of Dispossession in 1946 and under the title "Improvisations from Berlin" in 1996, in his book Poems. The two versions, although in a general sense the same, differ considerably in some of their imagery and symbolic associations. The revisions always seek a more "telling" word, deeper in feeling and more elegant in diction. The poem describes a cold and lonely Christmas evening (actually experienced in Berlin in 1944) filled with meditations on the tragic solitude of the human condition, when the poet has "no mother and no father, nor an idea", when God is freezing to death in the poet's blood. In a dark and frigid universe, with the Christmas evening coming to his door like a forlorn wanderer, he remembers his childhood and its beautiful dreams only to realize they are all dead.
