ENThe elemental torrent of Romanticism, which flooded Europe in the 19t h century, awakened the Lithuanian national consciousness. The European theatre, which played an important role in the development of the Romantic ideas, also influenced the first step of the Lithuanian amateur theatre. Romantic tendency sought to establish itself in the theatrical art of Lithuania as the herald of the national identity and "national spirit", since for the nations of Eastern Europe romanticism and national revival were almost synonymous. Along with the social comedy and the scenes du genre, the historical romantic plays and tragedies, reflecting upon the destiny of the nation, were popular on the Lithuanian amateur stage. The idealised porrraits of the historical personalities survived even into the second half of the 20t h century. In the context of the realist and modernist tendencies, they represented a quaint relic from the past. In the theatrical circles, the theoretical polemic between the "realists" and the "romantics" went on for decades. This debate, by and large, reflected a wider philosophical-ideological polemic between materialism and idealism. Balys Sruoga, a playwright and theatrical critic, asserted in his late period that Realism in the theatrical art is only the inferior, preparatory stage. In the ambience of the socialist realism that reigned supreme in the post-war Lithuanian theatre romantic tendencies helped to sustain the individuality and national identity of the Lithuanian theatrical art. In various historical periods, including our days, the Realist and Romantic tendencies in the Lithuanian theatrical art expressed themselves in the complex configurations of individual creativity and social-political tendencies.
