LTBaroko epocha, savarankiškos epochos statusą gavusi dėka Heinricho Wölfflino 1888 m., išsiskiria kaip viena daugiausiai prieštaringų diskusijų dėl pavadinimo ir turinio sukėlusių kultūrinių epochų žmonijos istorijoje. Straipsnyje glaustai analizuojamos ginčų dėl Baroko sąvokos, epochos turinio, genezės, topografijos, pamatinės idėjos ir meninių tendencijų, bruožų bei reikšmingumo, geografinių ir chronologinių ribų nustatymo peripetijos. Didelis dėmesys skiriamas Baroko epochos kultūriniam bei religiniam aspektams, įvairiems Baroko raiškos būdams tiek europiniame, tiek Abiejų Tautų Respublikos kontekste. Baroko epocha (XVII – XVIII a. I p.) buvo ryškiausia ir sodriausia LDK kultūrinė epocha. Renesanso šimtmetyje Lietuva tik atkakliai (ir sėkmingai) imitavo tai, kas Vakarų Europoje jau buvo tapę egzistencine savastimi, o Baroko epochoje pati tapo savarankiška ir lygiaverte kūrėja, subrandinusia nemažai europinės reikšmės kultūros reiškinių ir išauginusia europinio lygio asmenybių. ENThe epoch of Baroque, which was granted the status of an independent epoch due to Heinrich Wolff in 1888, distinguishes itself as one of the epochs, which caused the greatest number of contradictory discussions because of its name and contents in the history of cultural epochs of mankind. The article analyses succinctly the ins and outs of disputes over the conception of Baroque, the contents of the epoch, the genesis, topography, natural idea and artistic tendencies, features and significance, as well as the establishment of geographical and chronological boundaries. Much attention is paid to cultural and religious aspects of the Baroque epoch, various ways of Baroque expression within both the European context and that of the Republic of the Two Nations. The Baroque epoch (the 17th – the 18th century) was the most distinguished and richest cultural epoch in the GDL. In the Renaissance century Lithuania only persistently (and successfully) imitated what in Western Europe had become existential self, and in the Baroque epoch Lithuania itself became and independent and equal creator, which matured a large number of cultural events of European significance and which produced personalities of a European level.
