ENThe article discusses the solidarity of the Balts in the interwar press. The works of three interwar publicists – writer Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas, scientist Kazys Pakštas and journalist Matas Šalčius – show that the idea of Baltic solidarity was perceived in a different way. Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas concentrates on the idea of cultural work. He himself joined the cultural initiatives and became one of the initiators of the society of Lithuanian and Latvian solidarity. Professor of Vytautas Magnus University Kazys Pakštas saw the Lithuanians and Latvians among the peoples of the Baltic Sea region – he defended the Baltoscandian vision as the guarantee of absolute security. Social and political journalism of Matas Šalčius, a famous traveller and director of news agency ELTA, is notable for the critical evaluation of earlier activities. Seeing the approaching downfall of the state he emphasized the importance of political initiatives. All these considerations concerning the solidarity of Baltic States show that the idea of Lithuanian and Latvian brotherhood, that arose during the time of national revival and remained urgent when Lithuania became an independent state, was interpreted in various ways and attempts were made to accomplish it.
