ENThe restoration of St. Anne's Church that took place during the first decade of the 20th century has been repeatedly discussed in the scientific literature. The most extensive analysis of this church was carried out by V. Drėma, who presented the course of the aforementioned restoration, assessing it from the scientific and qualitative aspects of the restoration in his wide-ranging study (1991). The main sources that have been used for the illumination of this event are the records of the St. Anne's Church Restoration Committee published in the periodicals of the time, and also some part of other Committees documents and drawings of the church that are kept in the Lithuanian State Historical Archive. The author of this article refers to the abundant written material that has not yet been used by scientists (the correspondence of the Church Restoration Committee, documentation of quests, accounts, the protocols of meetings, and other) that is kept in the Department of Manuscripts in the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. The author aims to re-evaluate the restoration of the church, focusing on the initiators and sponsors of the church's restoration, i.e. their motives and attitude towards this monument of architecture and the works that were carried out for this monument's improvement. At the same time the written and iconographical material that has not yet been introduced to the scientific circulation is presented. The restoration of St. Anne's Church was one of the first and undoubtedly one of the largest civic initiatives that took place at the turn of the century. The main organiser of this initiative is .considered to be the priest Jonas Juozapas Labokas. Overall, it was both an example of a rather large scale group patronage and a display of the vitality of the culture's support at the early 20th century. The main inducement for the society's contribution to the renewal of the church was the historical and artistic value of this monument - the church's foundations connections with the name of Vytautas the Great (contravening the historical true, as we now know) and Gothic architecture itself. Meanwhile the emphasis was not put on the religious aspects of this initiative, although this was forbade (the aim to enliven the previously long forbidden activity of the Catholic Church). It was not only the financial support but also the active civic position of the intelligentsia and the response to project offers, which bore a particular significance on the restoration process. The beginning of the economic crisis and the simultaneous rise in various levies (for example, for associations and press) were probably the main reasons for the decrease in donations for the church's restoration after 1905. Perhaps the mistakes made by the executors of the restoration that were determined by the unfavourable circumstances were also a reason for the decrease in donations. [From the publication]
