Movement of language: iconicity of the poetic image and the metaphor
Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article concerns the comparison of metaphor (as language's motion) and the poetic image (as one of author's offered strategies of text understanding). Comparison is made in the rhetorical level. The main question discussed in this article is the iconicity of poetic image and metaphor. Iconicity is considered to be the value of the art on the whole, not of literary texts only. Processes like imitation, representation, reference, recognition are described. These processes are typical for visual and verbal discourses both. The statement is made that iconicity as function in poetry is revealed the best way trough the poetic image. Metaphor works more complicated than poetic image. It is emphasized that metaphor is not text's beautification nor rhetorical feature only; it is more organic than ornamental part of the writing, which visually and conceptually manages the whole of the text. Metaphor, integrated into frames of meaning in the level of discourse, renders the meaning by depiction, creating a holographic image. [From the publication]
