Summary / Abstract:

ENThe role of intelligentsia is very important in each epoch and for each nation. They are the people capable to maintain national and religious ideals, they constantly seek for increasing their knowledge, are open to the truth and are also capable of critical estimation. It is not surprising, that the supporters of occupational and dictatorial regimes dealt with them in two ways: cither with the intention to win them over or exterminate them. Merciless fate of Lithuanian intellectuals is connected with the years of occupation of czarist Russia, the Nazi time and the years of bolshevism. Catholic intellectuals were most often persecuted because religion was almost always closely connected with national consciousness. Catholic intellectuals in inter-war Lithuania were a great help to the Church while taking part in the Catholic Action, responding to the incitement of Pope Pius XI. The intellectuals united themselves into organizations, tried to draw over less educated people in order to train them as conscious Christians and citizens of the state. Catholic organizations of men and women, of youth and adults realized educational and charitable programs. In order to unite men of science there was being founded a catholic university, established the academy of catholic science. Priests as well as secular intellectuals took part in the Catholic Action.Priest Žitkevičius, Dr. I. Bistras, prelate A. Jakštas-Dambrauskas, docent Pr. Penkauskas, docent A. Tumėnas, Dr. A. Gylys, professors K. Pakštas, S. Ladygienė, Šalkauskis, Pr. Dovydaitis, docent A. Maceina, priest S. Yla, docent A. Šalys and others should be mentioned as exemplary personalities. Catholic intellectuals played an important part in the religious life of inter-war Lithuania. Only thanks to the intellectuals Catholic organizations prospered and catholic press survived, to say nothing about the foundation of Theology-philosophy department or catholic university. As far as educational work of the catholic action is concerned, it must be stated that it was led by the inter-war catholic intellectuals, though much more should be said about the training of adults. Still a part of intellectual catholics were cither passive or prudent helpers of the Church because the then (1926-1940) regime of nationalist parties disturbed the public catholic activity. Some catholic organizations were banned the Catholic University was closed and active priests and laypersons were persecuted. [From the publication]
