ENThis article analyses an area which is not being analysed in Lithuania often as well as in other countries. Mostly the quality of newspapers content is associated with determinant factors (objectivity, fairness, accuracy etc.) and not linked to the distribution of different topics or balance between the hard and soft news. A daily newspaper "Lietuvos rytas" was chosen because of its huge circulation between 1990 and 2000 as well as for being influential in the formation of public opinion. Research also involves identifying relationships between the main changes and social, economic, cultural or political context in Lithuania. Due to the fact that the content of newspapers is always closely related to the dominant and essential functions of media system, they are also included in this article. The percentage of published entertaining news increased dramatically during the period and there was a great decline in a number of political and economic news. Therefore the publications on entertaining news, sports and particularly criminal issues reduced the proportion of hard news. It also allows to observe tendencies connected with a growing number of all soft news in "Lietuvos rytas" throughout the investigative period and approach a question if the newspaper is becoming entertaining or scandals-oriented like a typical tabloid in the end of the period instead of being more similar to a broadsheet like in the beginning. If a liberal model is used to assess the orientation of a newspaper "Lietuvos rytas", the quality of its content remained stable, because the most important factor of evaluation is market-oriented.This means that people’s decision to buy the newspaper express their preference to choose such news. Consequently there is a point of a classic evaluation, using the specific critical criterions, which reveals the deterioration of "Lietuvos rytas" content. [From the publication]
