Summary / Abstract:

ENAdolescents' risk taking (often antisocial) behavior is an important research problem. In order to find what psychological qualities differentiate those who engage in health and other risk behaviors from those who do not, one line of psychological research has focused on decision-making and information processing variables that are implicated in the "choice" to engage in risky behaviors. Another line of psychological research has focused on individual differences in temperament and personality traits. There are almost no trying to integrate knowledge about "risky" personality profile with research from decision theory perspective, to better understand how the decision making processes may mediate the links between personality dispositions and later risk behaviors. In order to investigate the relationships between some personality factors, propensity to make risky decisions and some patterns of risk taking behaviors in late adolescence we sampled 408 students from Lithuanian universities. Subjects completed Eysenck's personality questionnaire, Kogan and Wallach's Choice Dilemma Questionnaire; risk behavior was assessed with the help of Jackson's Risk Attitude Scale and using responses to direct questions about real risk behavior. Results showed that personality dispositions of late adolescents (extraversion, rigidity, emotional stability, social desirability) and gender have the impact to the propensity to make risky decisions and to take risks in different situations.
