Reconsidering musicology in the Baltic States of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia : 1990–2007

LTŠioje trumpoje dabartinių Baltijos valstybių muzikologijos apžvalgoje autorius pasirinko analizuoti dvi problemas, kurios vienodai sudėtingos ir yra tarpusavy susiję. Pirmiausia keliamas klausimas kaip Pabaltijo muzikologija atspindi XX a. dramatiškų įvykių istoriją (Antrojo pasaulinio karo ir jį sekusios okupacijos). Ir svarstoma antra problema: ar Pabaltijo muzikologija rado būdus ir priemones atskleisti muzikos, kurtos dviejų didelių katastrofų (fašizmo ir komunistų diktatūros) laikotarpiu, semantiką? Kitaip tariant, analizuojama kaip muzikologijos mokslininkai tyrinėjo muzikantų reakcijas į XX a. totalitarines sistemas ir su tuo susijusius muzikos pokyčius. Tuo tikslu autorius analizuoja tris enciklopedijas: Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (1994–96); The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (2000) ir The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (antras leidimas, 2001). Naudodamas kiekybinę analizę jis apžvelgia su nagrinėjamu laikotarpiu susijusius tekstus, esančius nagrinėjamose enciklopedijose, kurie atskleidžia kokią svarbą leidėjas ar autorius skyrė šiai temai. Analizuodamas kaip Pabaltijo muzikologai nagrinėjo muzikines interpretacijas, sukurtas esant griežtai totalitarinei cenzūrai, autorius susidūrė su ribotu informacijos kiekiu, nes minėtose enciklopedijose pateikti tik labai skurdūs duomenys (išvardinta kompozitorių veikla ir analizuojamu laikotarpiu įsteigtos institucijos). ENThe brief overview of musicology of the current Baltic States analyses two problems that are equally difficult and interrelated. First, the author raises a question how Baltic musicology reflects the history of dramatic events of the 20th c. (World War II and subsequent occupations). The second problem is whether Baltic musicology found ways and means to reveal the semantics of music created during the period of two large catastrophes (Fascism and Communist dictatorship). In other words, the author analyses how musicologists investigated musicians’ reactions towards the totalitarian systems of the 20th c. and related changes in music. Thus, the author analyses three encyclopaedias: “Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart” (1994–1996); “The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music” (2000) and “The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians” (2nd ed., 2001). With the help of quantitative analysis he overviews the texts from the given encyclopaedias, related to the period under discussion, which reveal the importance attributed to this topic by the publisher or author. While analysing how Baltic musicologists investigated musical interpretations created under the conditions of strict totalitarian censorship, the author faced limited information, because the given encyclopaedias present only scarce data (enumerate the activities of composers and institutions established during the period under discussion). This again shows the unfavourable situation of the then Baltic musicology.
