ENA pergola is an architectural park feature covered by open lattice and planted with climbing plants. This garden feature has been in existence since ancient Rome, flourishing especially in the French and Italian parks of the 16th–18th century. Graceful and lattice pergola often appeared in the wall painting of European secular buildings, especially palaces and villas. Thus far, the analysis of the development of the pergola motif in the décor of the Lithuanian secular architecture has not been possible as data concerning the polychrome of dwelling houses has just begun to be collected. It is for this reason that this article presents examples of pergolas painted in 19th century Vilnius secular architecture. Data gathered during polychrome investigations conducted between 1971 and 2008 has enabled this present article to be written. This data identified almost ten buildings which were adorned with 19th century pergola’s and trellis’ motifs of various configurations. In almost all examples of the depictions of vine supporting wooden lattices located in secular Vilnius interiors, the image is rather constructive and clear, sometimes even with schematically painted vertical and horizontal criss-crossing stripes of various shades of brown. This illustrates that the 19th century depiction of the pergola motif was influenced by the constructive architecture of conservatories. Consequently, the painted support of climbing plants imitates not only (as in earlier ages) a light wooden support but also the glass and metal construction characteristic of conservatories.
