XX amžiaus JAV lietuvių ir Lietuvos istorikų požiūris į generolą Tadą Kosciušką

LTStraipsnyje apžvelgiamas lietuvių požiūris į 1794 m. sukilimo vadą Tadą Kosciušką ir pateikiami jo kilmės bei tautiškumo priklausomybės vertinimai. Tie klausimai daugiausia dėmesio susilaukė tarp JAV lietuvių. Jie jautriai reagavo į JAV lenkų atvirus pareiškimus, jog JAV nepriklausomybės karo didvyris generolas Tadas Kosciuška buvo lenkiškos kilmės, Lenkijos pilietis. JAV lietuviai (J. Hertmanavičius ir J. Koncevičius-Končius) bandė parengti anglų kalba atskirą studiją, skirtą T. Kosciuškos lietuviškai kilmei įrodyti. Pagrindinis jų argumentas – pats T. Kosciuška laiškuose minėjo savo lietuvišką kilmę. Dėl neaiškių priežasčių tokios studijos ne tik anglų, bet ir lietuvių kalba mes iki šiol neturime. Tarybiniame laikotarpyje tautiškumo klausimas istorikų darbuose nebuvo aktualus. T. Kosciuškos lietuviškumas buvo siejamas su LDK pilietiškumu. Istorikas R. Jasas rinko medžiagą generolo biografijai ir jo ryšiams su Lietuva nušviesti, bet istoriko mirtis sutrukdė išleisti monografiją. Tarp Lietuvos istorikų vyrauja nuomonė, kad T. Kosciuška – gudų bajorų kilmės, bet iš LKD, o JAV gyvenančių lietuvių istorikų ir besidominčių istorija darbuose dominuoja teiginys, kad T. Kosciuška yra arba lietuvis, arba lietuviškos kilmės gudų bajoras iš LDK. ENThe article reviews the Lithuanians’ attitude towards Tadas Kosciuška (Kościuszko), the leader of 1794 rebellion as well as presents the estimation of his descent and nationality. These issues received close attention from the Lithuanians residing in the USA, especially during the pre-war period. They sensitively reacted towards the Polish emigrants’ explicit statements that the USA Independence War hero General Tadas Kosciuška was of Polish descent, a citizen of Poland. The American Lithuanians in their press, in their gatherings and in their reports to the USA authorities tried to deny the General’s Polish origin. There turned up quite a number of Kosciuška’s phony relatives from Lithuania to claim the General’s inheritance about which little was known. All these things sparked a keen interest in the General’s descent among the American Lithuanians. Therefore, they even attempted (e. g. J. Hertmanavičius, J. Koncevičius-Končius, A. Šalna) to prepare a detailed study in the English language to prove T. Kosciuška’s Lithuanian origin. This initiative was supported by the Lithuanian representatives in the USA, the main reason being the fact that T. Kosciuška himself mentioned his Lithuanian descent in some of his letters. Unfortunately, because of unknown reasons, we do not have this "Lithuanian" study either in the English or Lithuanian languages up to now.During the Soviet period, the issue of national identity was not appropriate in historians’ works as T. Kosciuška’s Lithuanian origin was associated with the citizenship of the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian (GDL). Historian R. Jasas collected the material about the General’s biography and his relations with Lithuania; however, the historian’s death terminated the research, and the monograph was not published. Some Lithuanian historians advocate the idea that T. Kosciuška is a Belarusian nobleman but from the GDL while Lithuanian historians from the USA are of the opinion that T. Kosciuška is either Lithuanian or a Belarusian nobleman of Lithuanian descent from the GDL. Unfortunately, it should be stated that the number of Lithuanian historians’ works, devoted to T. Kosciuška’s biography, his activity and relations with Lithuania, is regrettably and unforgettably low; we lag behind not only the Polish but also Belarusian historians in terms of researches conducted and scientific results published concerning the above mentioned issues.
