Rytų Lietuvos kultūrinė tradicija : keli užkalbėtojo paveikslo bruožai

LTRemiantis 2009 metų tautosakos ekspedicijoje Švenčionių ir Ignalinos rajonuose užrašytais duomenimis apie tenykštę užkalbėjimų tradiciją ir užkalbėtojus, pačių užkalbėtojų pasakojimais apie save ir savo veiklą, straipsnyje siekiama apibūdinti rytų Lietuvos folkloriniuose tekstuose ryškėjantį užkalbėtojo portretą kaip kultūrinės šio krašto tradicijos dalį, nustatyti svarbiausius jo bruožus, tarp jų – bendruomenės narių požiūrį į užkalbėtojus ir pačių užkalbėtojų savivokos ypatumus. ENOn the basis of narrative materials and interviews recorded during the fieldwork session taking place in 2009 in Eastern Lithuanian districts of Ignalina and Švenčionys, the author aims to elucidate the distinctive role that charmers play in the social and cultural life of this region, as well as certain peculiar elements of the charmers’ self-image and their picture as perceived by members of the local communities. Having noted the particular vitality and importance of the charming tradition still thriving in this borderland region, the author seeks to establish the most important features of the charmer as a cultural figure and certain centre of the community life, as well as bearer of certain traditional knowledge, which is inherited and passed on in strict accordance with precisely determined rules. According to the several interviewed charmers, the activity that they are unselfishly engaged in has nothing to do with sorcery or magic; their ability to help and heal people and livestock comes from the Christian God, and faith in Him is the main and ultimate condition of carrying on as a charmer. The concept of belief/faith/trust keeps repeatedly popping up in interviews with these people, and is endowed with particular importance and meaning in their narratives and stories about themselves and their power.
