ENThe Old Believers of Lithuania: History, Culture, Art is a collection of articles that acquaint readers with the history, culture, and tradition of icon painting of the Russian Old Believers of Lithuania from the second half of the 17th century to the beginning of the 21st century. This book was pub lished on the occasion of the 300th jubilee of the Old Believer Church in Lithuania. According to the Degučiai Chronicle, the first Old Believer community in Lithuania was estab lished in 1710, in the village of Pūsčia (in the present-day district of Rokiškis). The Old Believers who settled there had been cruelly persecuted in Russia because they did not recognize the church reform adopted by Patriarch Nikon during 1653-1656. In order to escape from oppression, they fled to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and to the joint possessions of the Polish-Lithuanian state (the duchy of Courland and the voivodeship of Livonia), i.e. to the present-day territory of Lithuania, Belarus, and eastern and southern Latvia. During the late 17th century and throughout the 18th century, Lithuania not only provided refuge to Old Believers persecuted by the Russian czar ist administration but also became an important center for their spiritual life. Living outside the borders of Russia, the Old Believers of Lithuania preserved their "old faith."They settled in compact religious communities where they built monasteries and churches, safeguarded and copied their old church books, and cultivated their folklore as well as their traditions of painting and venerating icons. As we know, since long ago Lithuania has been a multinational country where diverse peoples have lived and professed different religions. In today's Lithuania, the Old Believer Pomorian Church is one of the nine traditional religious communities recognized by the state, but because Old Believers live apart and have different cultural priorities, their religion is almost unknown to Lithuanian society.This book is one of the first to try to open certain pages in the history and culture of the Old Believers of Lithuania.The articles collected here present the cultural heritage, both spiritual and material, of the traditional Old Believer community that has lived in Lithuania for over three hundred years - its history, book culture, folklore, and icon painting. These articles not only popularize the values of the Old Believer cultural heritage in Lithuania but also reflect the latest scholarly research in this field (many new facts, illustrations, and hypotheses are presented). This book consists of four parts, each of which describes a certain aspect of the multifaceted Old Believer culture in Lithuania. Each part contains from twelve to eighteen themes."History" was written by Doc. Dr. Grigorijus Potašenko;"Book Culture" by Doc. Dr. Nadežda Morozovą; "Folklore" by Prof. Habil. Dr. Jurijus Novikovas; and "Icons" by Mari-Liis Paaver (of Tallinn) and Grigorijus Potašenko (themes 1-3 and 12). More than two hundred illustrations are included here: reproductions of pictures, icons, and graphic works; drawings by the authors; photographs of historical and contemporary people, churches, localities, books, and various church utensils; and maps. Some of these illustrations are published here for the first time.
