ENThe marital chastity guarantees the realisation of the major features of marriage: unity and indissolubility. The article dwells upon the problem that the careless perception of the marital chastity makes it hard or even impossible to realise it later in married life. To transform the sexual appeal to purely human category it has to meet the three criteria: wilful management, integration into love and support of the existence. The restraint of the sexual appeal and its integration into love is conditioned by chastity, which is revealed as the demonstration of spiritual power, emancipating love from egoism and aggression. The chastity is not the final notion in itself. It is being cultivated from the childhood, so that later it should become the personal decision of each individual which, with no doubt, requires great spiritual efforts. The chastity enables a person to manage the whirlpool of passions, to restrain the desires in the way that allows living in harmony and peace. Married people are also called to live in chastity, the main features of which are distinguished in this article. The features also disclose the differences between a marital act and sexual act, which are: marital act is the absolute privilege of the married (while a sexual act is basically the act between interchangeable partners), mutual self-donation (sexual act between unmarried individuals is not an act of self-donation but rather self-deception), the openness towards new life (a sexual act in its essence is inimical to life). The research intends to raise the question: what is the notion of marital chastity between the engaged?.The purpose of the research: to reveal the notion of the marital chastity between the engaged. The methods applied: the structural analysis of literary sources, quantitative survey analysis and mathematical statistical descriptive methods for data processing. The research is based on the empiric quantitative analysis "The Notion of Marital Chastity Between the Engaged", the quantitative survey method being applied. Research sample - the respondents as the target group consisted of the engaged couples (intending to take marriage under the laws of Catholic Church) from all seven dioceses in Lithuania. Summing up the research results it became evident that the majority of the engaged couples do not understand the essential truth of the marital chastity as the absolute devotion. The fact that the majority of the engaged have been already living together and having sexual relations proves that the main element of marriage - the marital act itself - is completely deprecated. The majority of the engaged do not support the basic requirements associated with the marital act - demonstration of love and openness towards new life. Many couples consider contraception acceptable as the method of family planning. The analysis of the research results proved that the overwhelming majority of the engaged (95%) support the idea of sexual relations before marriage, thus making it possible to state, that almost all the engaged do not perceive either the essence of the marital act or its significance in the context of marriage. The great number of respondents considers contraception as an acceptable tool of family planning. [text from author]
