Dviejų kartų tikrovė

LTSudėtingos istorinės aplinkybės – pagrindinė emigracijos priežastis. Vyresniesiems išeiviams (straipsnyje jiems atstovauja P. Orintaitė), subrandintiems lietuviškos kultūros, teko sunkiai taikytis prie naujos amerikietiškos aplinkos. Naujoji kultūra juos paveikė nedaug. Tuo tarpu jaunieji išeiviai užaugo dviejų kultūrų sankirtoje, tačiau daliai jų artimesnė liko lietuviškoji kultūra, nors ir skiepyta svetimoje erdvėje (E. Juodvalkė). Analizuojant memuarus svarbu išsiaiškinti, kokia aplinka formuoja žmogų: ar kūrinyje ji sutampa su realiai egzistavusia, o gal kiekvienas rašytojas pateikia savo interpretaciją? Remiantis sociokritikos atstovo Piero Barberio teiginiais, kiekvieno autoriaus tekste galima rasti savojo meto visuomeninės situacijos atspindžių – tai politinis kūrinio matmuo arba istorinė tikrovė. Šalia jos visuomet slypi ir egzistencinis kūrinio matmuo arba emocinė tikrovė – kiekvieno rašančio asmeninė bendrosios padėties samprata. Petronėlės Orintaitės memuaruose pasakoja moteris, mama, atsidūrusi skaudžių istorinių įvykių centre. Net ir patekus į beviltišką situaciją jai labiausiai rūpi, kaip išsaugoti vaiko gyvybę. Eglės Juodvalkės atsiminimai atskleidžia šiltą ir skaidrią lietuviškumo sampratą: knygos veikėja, net nemačiusi Lietuvos, jaučiasi tikrų tikriausia lietuvė. ENThe aim of the present analysis is to discuss the peculiarities of the memoirs written by Lithuanian immigrants to the USA and compare different responses to exile, articulated by two immigrant generations. The older generation, represented here by Petronėlė Orintaitė with the fictional memoir In the Bush of Liepalotai (Liepalotų medynuose), was born and raised in Lithuania. The foreign culture of America, which such immigrants encountered in their adulthood, has influenced them only partly. The second generation, to which Eglė Juodvalkė with the memoir The Hill of Sugar (Cukraus kalva) belongs, was born and raised in the USA, with the knowledge of Lithuania available through stories and books. Second generation immigrants grew up in between two cultures, and some of them, such as Juodvalkė, who has never been to Lithuania, but considers herself a Lithuanian, preference Lithuanian mentality and traditions. Sociocriticism emphasizes the interrelation between two aspects of the text: its "political" and "existential" dimensions, or else, historical and emotional realities. Memoirs usually reflect a specific historical, social, and political situation, but every individual author interprets it in his/her own way.First generation immigrants tend to emphasize the guilt and pain of leaving the homeland and difficulties in adapting to the new culture. In Orintaitė's memoir, the female narrator shares her difficult experience of having to defend the child, while second generation Juodvalkė demonstrates a favorable and optimistic attitude towards Lithuanian culture. Immigrant memoirs have not been exhaustively researched. The present sociocritical analysis is a new look at them and a new attempt to discuss the situation of exile. [From the publication]
