LTLietuvos didysis kunigaikštis Žygimantas Augustas Merkinei 1569 m. gruodžio 7 d. suteikė savivaldos arba Magdeburgo teises, paskyrė miesto vaitą, buvo išsirinktas magistratas, tad turėjo būti pradėti rašyti ir miesto aktai. Deja, pačių seniausių miesto aktų knygų neišliko. Čia skelbiamos Merkinės miesto aktų knygos (saugoma Lietuvos valstybės istorijos archyve – SA 5845) dokumentai apima 1598 m. pabaigą – 1627 m. pradžią, bet 1606–1608 m. dokumentų joje iš viso nėra. Šioje gerokai aplamdytoje, sulietoje vandeniu knygoje vieni lapai sunkiai perskaitomi (vietomis tekstas išblukęs), kitų nutrupėję kraštai, kampai ar galai, kai kurie lapai išplėšti. Joje drauge įrišti miesto tarybos (magistrato) 1598–1605 m. aktai (čia 1–175 numeriai) ir vaito bei suolininkų 1609–1627 m. aktai (čia 176–736 numeriai). Skelbiami Merkinės miesto aktai (lenkų, lotynų, gudų kalbomis) yra nepaprastai svarbus šaltinis to laikotarpio miestų gyvenimui pažinti, atspindi to meto materialinę ir dvasinę kultūrą, pareigūnų ir paprastų miestiečių teisinius santykius, miestiečių tarpusavio turtinius sandorius, to meto teisės kodeksų naudojimo praktiką ir t.t. Skelbiami dokumentai bus naudingi istorikams ir teisininkams, negrinėjantiems XVI a. pabaigos – XVII a. pradžios ne tik Merkinės, bet apskritai Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės miestų istoriją. Pateikiamos dokumentų anotacijos lietuvių kalba ir dalykų, asmenvardžių bei vietovardžių rodyklės suteikia galimybę leidiniu naudotis visiems, kurie neabejingi mūsų krašto praeičiai.

ENOn 7 December 1569, Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund II Augustus granted Merkinė the right to self-governance or the Magdeburg rights, and appointed the vaitas of the town. The magistrate of the town was elected, and all that required deeds of the city to be drafted. Unfortunately, the oldest deed books of the city did not make it to the present day. This work presents documents of deed books of the town of Merkinė (kept in the Lithuanian State Historical Archive – SA 5845), which cover the period from the end of 1598 to the beginning of 1627, however, it does not contain any deeds on 1606–1608. Pages of this rather battered and water damaged book got stuck together. Some of them are hardly legible (in some places the text has faded), some have their edges crumbled off, and some pages are missing. It also has deeds of the town council (magistrate) of 1598–1608 (here Nr. 1–175) and the vaitas’s deeds of 1609–1627 (here Nr.176–736). The published deeds of the town of Merkinė (in Polish, Latin and Belarusian languages) are an exceptionally significant source of information about the then residents of the town. They reflect the then material and spiritual culture, legal relations of officials and ordinary residents of the town, property relations between the town residents, the practice of the use of the then legal codes, etc. The published documents will be useful for historians and lawyers as well as those studying the history of Merkinė and other towns of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of the end of the 16th century – the beginning of the 17th century. Lithuanian abstracts of the documents are provided, and the index of objects, personal names and names of places make the book accessible for everybody interested in the past of our land.
