LTStraipsnyje aptariama kaukės motyvo vaizduosena lenkų modernizmo dailininko Witoldo Wojtkiewicziaus (1879-1909) ir lietuvių prozininko Jurgio Savickio (1890-1952) kūryboje. ENThe article aims at the analysis of the motif of a mask in the works of Lithuanian writer Jurgis Savickis (1890-1952) and Polish painter Witold Wojtkiewicz (1879-1909). The mask is understood as an opposition between a thing that is shown and a thing that is hidden, and is interpreted here not only as a face cover, but also in its wider meaning - as playing or pretending something/someone. The importance of this motif is evident both in Savickis and Wojtkiewicz’s art. In Wojtkiewicz’s paintings, the characters are placed among the elements of the stage, they wear theatrical costumes, and constantly switch over their roles (children pretend being adults, dolls play people, etc.). Savickis’ prose contains frequent theatrical references: the comparison of objective and theatrical realities, circus, opera, marionettes, the lexemes "mask", "role", etc. They have been taken from the art of expressionism and correspond to the understanding of life as a bitter comedy. The ambiguity and multidimensionality of the motif of mask perfectly serves for representing a cryptic human existence. [From the publication]
