ENAntanas Lyberis (1909-1996) is known for a significant contribution to both the theory and practice of lexicography. During 50 years of his professional life the linguist compiled and edited all volumes of the academic Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language (Lietuvių kalbos žodynas) and worked on the first two editions of the Dictionary of Contemporary Lithuanian (Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos žodynas, 1954, 1972); he is the author of the first Dictionary of Lithuanian Synonyms (Lietuvių kalbos sinonimų žodynas), a compiler of Lithuanian-Russian dictionaries, a co-author of the Learner's Dictionary of Lithuanian Spelling and Accentuation (Mokomasis lietuvių kalbos rašybos ir kirčiavimo žodynas), which is still published. In the introductory article of this study he is also described as the founder of modern Lithuanian lexicography. The book offers a collection of A. Lyberis's research articles, which appeared in 1935-1992 in numerous research publications and the press, and a summary of his PhD thesis in Russian. The field of his research covers a number of research areas: lexicography, lexicology, accentology, history of linguistics.His PhD thesis The Dictionary of Lithuanian Synonyms and the Main Principles of Compiling it written in 1959 was the first major work in the theory of lexicography focusing on problems of Lithuanian dictionaries. A. Lyberis witnessed the very beginning of compiling dictionaries in Lithuania: how the first team of compilers was convened to produce the dictionary of Lithuanian, how the Lithuanian school of lexicographers evolved. He described the whole process of the lexicographers' work, their personalities, how card files for the Dictionary of Lithuanian were collected and stored. One of the sections of the present book focuses on his reminiscences. It also gives access to the key documents of Lyberis's biography, his letters, archival materials and pictures. At the end of the book A. Lyberis's bibliography is given; it includes all his published articles, all editions of dictionaries which he either compiled or edited, also sources focusing on Antanas Lyberis himself. The collection of articles by A. Lyberis introduces the development of Lithuanian lexicography and lexicology in the 2nd half of the 20th century, gives a historical overview of the then linguistics and society; it thus makes part of the heritage of Lithuanian linguistics.
