ENThe article discusses the panel painting of the Annunciation, safeguarded by the Lithuanian Art Museum since 1948. The painting was translated to the museum from one of the side altars of St Francis and St Bernardino Church in Vilnius. This interesting piece of art has not as yet received adequate attention from the researchers. It was featured in the book published in Vilnius in 1918 by Walter Jäger, on Vilnius churches of St Anne, St Francis and St Bernardino, in 1931 it received some more detailed discussion in the article by Mieczyslaw Limanowski ran by the catholic magazine "W službie". Afterwards the painting sunk to oblivion and no scientific examination of the painting has been carried so far. In the beginning of this year the painting was started to restore at the Pranas Gudynas Restoration Centre of Museum Treasures. On the basis of the written sources and the examination of the painting, it can be dated by the mid 17th century. In the early 18th. "The Annunciantion" was covered by a silver casing which did not survive into our days. In the second half of the 18th century the painting was considerably overpaintered by the painter Motiejus (very likely, by Vilnius artist Motiejus Sluščanskis (Sluszcanski)). The sources record him painted a new painting of this title. The article analyses changes in the visual expression of the painting and raises the question if the image changed in terms of iconography and content. The question is raised also to what extent the original (17th century) image influenced the artist of the 18th century. It has been established that the silver casing currently covering the painting was created in the end of the 19th or early 20th century and should be attributed to Vilnius craftsman Mykolas Neviadomskis (Newiadomski).
