ENLiterary historians repeat the detail in the memoirs of Archbishop Franciszek Albin Symon, alleging that Antanas Baranauskas while studying abroad and learning about the start of the uprising wrote passionate patriotic texts. They have not survived because the con fessor of the future bishop, a Jesuit father, advised the destruction of those texts. Is this tale reliable and what does its interpretation say about the character of Baranauskas? What texts of Baranaus kas can be tied to the uprising, the pre-uprising and post-uprising atmosphere of society? Searching for answers to these questions the article makes the assumption about what the attitude and texts of Baranauskas allow one to conclude about the engagement of a broader circle of Lithuania's clergy to support the uprising. In dis cussing with other writers of biographers of the poet the borders of the interpretations of Symon s memoirs are corrected, attention is paid to the religious experiences, tied to the 1863 experiences expressed in the letters of Baranauskas.
