ENMarcinkonys, Žiūrai and other neighbouring villages are often mentioned when speaking about the southern Aukštaitians. However, their subdialect has not been thoroughly examined. From the early 20th century onwards words were gathered for the comprehensive "Lietuvių kalbos žodynas" (The Lithuanian Dictionary). It also included the recorded material from Marcinkonys and neighbouring villages. Scanty manuscript texts and audio recordings dated back to 1964, 1971 and 1984 from the villages of Marcinkonys, Puvočiai and Darželiai are kept at the Archive of Dialects of the Department of the Language History and Dialectology of the Institute of the Lithuanian Language. This collection includes stories by thirteen informants who were born in Marcinkonys and neighbouring villages in the first half of the 20th century. The subjects are varied: wars, everyday activities and interests, customs and holidays, beliefs, tales, folk remedies, cooking, implements and utensils, relations between the members of a family and neighbours, man's life, the flora and fauna and others. The material is supplied with a glossary of rare and specific words of the subdialect, lexical and semantic loan words and hybrids. A CD contains some audio recordings of the stories told.
