Reikšminiai žodžiai: Antanas Baranauskas; Apšvietos literatūra; Biblijos vertimas; Literatūra; Tautinis atgimimas; Raštų leidyba; Seinų vyskupija; Tautinė tapatybė; Žemaitijos vyskupija; Antanas Barnauskas; Bible translation; Book publishing; Enlightment literature; Lithuanian literature; Tekstas; Lithuanian National Revival; National identity; Apšvieta; Samogitian bishopric; Romantizmas; Seinai bishopric; Textology; Vertybės; Komentarai; šaltiniai; Tarmės.; Textology; Text; Enlightenment; Romanticism; Values; Commentaries; Sources; Dialects.
ENIn this polemic study the life and work of Antanas Baranauskas (1835-1902), a nineteenth-century Lithuanian poet, a linguist, a Bible translator and a bishop, are analysed. His main literary works and the history of their publication are discussed from the point of view of textual scholarship. The first part, "Hermeneutics of the Personality" is concerned with the reflection of Baranauskas' biography in works on the history of literature and in cultural essayistics. Attempts are made to establish what constellation of the presuppositions of the consciousness formed the prevailing tradition of the model of a "contradictory personality". Archival data and testimonies by his contemporaries are treated not as a reflection of "historic reality", but as text, i. e. a sequence of signs recorded in language or by other means, whose coherence is determined first of all by reading. The author tries to present a concept of Baranauskas' national attitude which differs from the one in the works published earlier, to examine closer the period of his studies abroad and to define the aspects of his religious career and work, which have been little explored until now. The traditional typology of the poet's writings is questioned and the features of the Enlightenment are brought to light in the second part, "The Meanings of the Works". From the point of view of the history of ideas the concept of time and ideal guidelines in his poetry are discussed. Intertextual links with the Holy Bible are examined with more precision and attempts are made to identify adequately the cultural effect of Baranauskas' response to the ban on printing in the Latin alphabet. The third part, "The Textuality of ‘The Forest of Anykščiai'", examines the authority of the poem's texts from the point of view of various notions of the contemporary theory of editing. The 1882 Ostlitauische Texte, a parallel publication of the aforementioned poem and its implications for the development of the conceptions of the ontology of the text, has received most attention. A paradoxical tension between the poetic work and the means of its materialisation which are examined employing the concepts of the bibliographic and linguistic code is discussed. The fourth part, "The Boundaries of New Editions" is a methodologically developed critique of the latest publications of Baranauskas' poetry. The book combines a deconstructive approach especially where biographical myths and traditional philology are concerned: the dates and locations of the poet's writings and realities are made more accurate. The "Supplement" carries documents for the nomination of Baranauskas to the rank of bishop, which have been obtained from the Vatican Secret Archives and have never been published before.
