Summary / Abstract:

ENAlthough the relationship among physical activity, physical fitness and health are proved by scientific research, further studies of health-enhancing physical activity are on the priority list. The most important studies are focusing on the dose-response relationship between physical activity and various health components. The study aims to examine the relationships between body composition, physical activity, flexibility and muscular fitness in boys of 9th grades. The study was undertaken in March-April 2008 in randomly selected secondary schools of Kaunas. 118 schoolboys of 9t h grade have completed all the required tasks of this study. Their physical activity (PA) level was measured by modified short form of international PA questionnaire (IPAQ, Ainsworth, Levy, 2004). According to the modified recommendations all respondents were divided into three groups: vigorous PA (n=34), moderate PA (n=52) and low PA (n=32). Body composition was measured in the second stage of research and participants have performed physical fitness tests to measure their flexibility, explosive strength, muscular strength and endurance. One-way analysis of variance - ANOVA was used to evaluate the significant differences between PA and physical fitness. Relationships between PA and physical fitness were evaluated statistically by the Pearson correlation and SIMCA-P computer program. results. No statistically significant differences were established between body composition indices of different PA groups (p>0.05), however the tendency was seen that boys with vigorous PA were taller, thinner, had lower BMI and lower amount of body fat (% and kg). All subject groups vigorous PA frequency was 2-3 days, duration ranged from 20 minutes per 7 days to 48 minutes per 2 days. The significant differences in physical fitness tests among the groups were identified in vertical jump, sit and reach, and modified push-up (p<0.05). The significant linear correlation was between the total volume of PA and explosive strength, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance in 9t h grade schoolboys. There were positive weak and very weak relationships established among physical activity and physical fitness indices (r=0,290+0,315). Body composition indices of schoolchildren were strongly positively interrelated (r=0,675-0,952). Conclusions: There were weak, but significant positive relationships between schoolchildrens' PA and physical fitness indices, and between separate indices of physical fitness (flexibility, explosive strength and muscular strength and endurance) (p<0.05). Body composition components were significantly strongly interrelated (pO.01). Moderate PA (<2718 MET/ week) has positive influence on schoolchildren body composition and explosive strength results.
