The Metaphorization of the human mind as a computer in Lithuanian and English

LTStraipsnyje nagrinėjama konceptualioji metafora ŽMOGAUS PROTAS YRA KOMPIUTERIS ir jos raiška lietuvių ir anglų kalbose. Kalbinė metaforinių pasakymų analizė, atlikta remiantis lietuvių ir anglų kalbų tekstynų duomenimis, rodo, kad žinios apie kompiuterį (dažniausiai jo veikimo ypatybes) perkeliamos į žmogaus protinės veiklos sferą, ypač kalbant apie mąstymo ir atminties mechanizmus. Vyrauja metaforą aiškiai eksplikuojantys pasakymai (dažnai palyginimai ar žodžių junginiai, nusakantys „kompiuterio“ vietą galvoje). Tai rodo, kad jų metaforiškumas yra sąmoningai suvokiamas; neretai jiems būdingas naujumas, individualumas. Straipsnyje apžvelgiama kompiuterio metaforos kilmė, siejama su giliai įsišaknijusia mašinos metafora ir XX amžiaus antroje pusėje kognityvinėje psichologijoje dominavusia „kompiuterine“ (angl. computational) proto teorija, kuri, manoma, paskatino kompiuterinių terminų plitimą mokslinėje, o vėliau ir kasdienėje kalboje. Kalbos vartosenos pavyzdžiai rodo, kad metaforiškas proto kaip kompiuterio suvokimas (kaip ir mašinos metafora apskritai) išryškina tokius mechaninius proto aspektus kaip greitis, efektyvumas, tikslumas ir nustumia į šalį jo esmę – žmogiškąją prigimtį. ENThe article examines the conceptual metaphor HUMAN MIND IS A COMPUTER and its expression in the Lithuanian and English languages. The linguistic analysis of metaphoric speaking carried out based on the data of the corpus of the Lithuanian and English languages shows that the knowledge on computers (generally their operational features) are transposed to the sphere of the human mental activities, in particular when speaking about the mechanisms of reasoning and memory. Locutions clearly explicating the metaphor prevail (usually, comparisons or word combinations that define the location of the “computer” within the head). This shows that their metaphoric quality is consciously perceived; as often as not, they are noted for novelty and individuality. The article reviews the origin of the computer metaphor that is linked with the deep-seated machine metaphor and the computational theory of mind, which prevailed in the second half of the 20th century in cognitive psychology. It is believed that the latter promoted the spreading of the computer terms in scientific and eventually everyday speech. Examples of the language use show that the metaphoric perception of mind as a computer (likewise the machine metaphor in general) emphasises such mechanical aspects of mind as speed, effectiveness and accuracy, and pushes aside its essence – the human nature.
